Beşiktaş book a simple victory during their league opener tonight as they beat Antalyaspor 2-0 at the Vodafone Park thanks to goals from Pepe and Cenk Tosun.

Antalyaspor started the game with a fanatic man-marking system across the span of the entire pitch, giving Beşiktaş players very little room on the ball as they were instantly put under pressure from their direct opponent. In addition the match was riddled with fouls so the game never managed to pick up steam.

Beşiktaş threatened a few times over the right wing, but Quaresma and especially Andreas Beck didn’t utilize the rare space they got. Midway through the first half Pepe struck the underside of the bar with a thunderous header, but the ball bounced in front of the line and was cleared.

As the first half was drawing to a close Pepe showed up again following Atiba’s excellent headed pass on a Caner Erkin free-kick allowing Pepe to head it home at the far post: 1-0 in first half stoppage time.

Pepe scores on his Turkish league debut with an excellent header!

The start of the second half was much of the same, Antalyaspor didn’t deviate from their gameplan and continued to play with a tight man-marking system and the fouls kept stacking up.

After 63 minutes however one of those fouls came back to haunt them as Diego Ángelo failed to make contact with the ball and gave Cenk Tosun a nudge in the penalty area, the referee pointed to the spot and Cenk Tosun converted the penalty: 2-0 after 64 minutes.

Following the Black Eagles’ second goal Antalyaspor made a few changes and Samuel Eto’o moved in to a more forward role, this resulted in their best chance in second half stopage time following a mistake by Pepe, but Fabri did briliantly to dive in to Eto’o’s feet and prevent him from pulling one back.

All in all Beşiktaş never found themselves in any danger of dropping points without ever reaching their best level. Beşiktaş still have plenty of room for improvement but seeing off a tough side like Antalyaspor without any home fans being permitted in the stadium in the way that they did, is a very promising start to their season.
