Beşiktaş opened their 2017-2018 Champions League campaign with a dream win over Porto. On MD1 of the Champions League, Beşiktaş defeated Porto 3-1 at The Dragão Stadium on wednesday night. With the goals coming from Talisca, Cenk Tosun and Babel. Tosic also scored an unlucky own goal to beat Fabri but The Black Eagles surely received the recompence for their team play.

Here are some of the post match reactions after the victory.

Şenol Güneş:

It was important for us to a make a positive start into our Champions League campaign. We were patient and precise. However, it’s only one win, and we need many more.”

“We won’t consider us as the best team in our group. We will work to be the best. Now, after this night, Monaco and Leipzig will be more careful when they play against us. It was important for us to a make a positive start into our Champions League campaign. My players gave their best in this game. We knew they were going to try to put us under pressure. We played against a good team. We were patient and precise and we used our physical strength very well. Our experienced players stepped up and we are happy to come out as winners.  However, it’s only one win and we have a hard fixture ahead of us. We need many more.”

He also answered the question about Tosic’s own goal with a good humor:

“Dusko Tosic loves to score but he sometimes confuses the in which goal to score.”

After a question about the reserve players, he answered:

“Some of them played on the pitch and some of them stayed on the bench. There is this polemic in Turkey about why the players stays on the bench. They stepped up and contributed to the game when required. It’s their success and they played their part well.”

Ryan Babel:

“In search for an equaliser, they imposed a lot of pressure in the second half, so we had to find another goal to secure our victory. On the other hand, our defence stood their ground tonight.”

Cenk Tosun:

“My foot met the ball perfectly on my goal and with a bit of luck, its direction was good. My goal has been good for us just after the game was getting balanced. I am also happy that we won. I scored a nice goal. We started the game well and we were better in possession. After we conceded we lost the ground. We scored an own goal. But we didn’t play too defensively in the second half. At the end, we scored a studied goal. It’s never easy to score 3 goals against Porto here. Our defence was solid. It was very important to start the campaign with 3 points with 3 goals.”

Quaresma:

“I congratulate my friends. First games are always hard to play. We worked for this match throughout this whole week. Porto is a strong team. They did not concede until they met us. It’s important to score 3 against them. We still have many more games ahead of us. I tried to do my best for my team, but this was certainly the hardest 90 minutes of my career. Porto and Beşiktaş are the two clubs that will always be in my heart, I will always be a Portista.”

Pepe:

“It was a difficult game. We prepared well for the game and we committed to the opponent tactically. It was important to start well in the Champions League. I congratulate my friends. It was an important game for me too. I’ve learnt many things here and it was my first European game with Beşiktaş.”

Talisca:

“It was really great to score a goal here. I thank my family and my club. They’ve always supported me. We played the game well in its both ways. We took the chances in an away game and we won.”

Sérgio Conceição (Porto Coach):
“We were facing an experienced side with players of great individual quality. However, that doesn’t excuse what happened as we also have a good team. That said, we had enough chances to have ended with a different result. We didn’t start well here. We were missing aggression when Beşiktaş attacked us. We recovered well from going a goal behind the first time and we could have even gone in front at that point, Yet we went into the break a goal down.

After the break we tried to focus on changing what wasn’t working in the first half. We had a few chances to equalise, but, as you saw, we conceded a third. I told my players that our team is capable at this level and I will continue to tell them that. We have allowed three points to slip, but we’ll go in search of those in future games in order to qualify.”

I can’t stress enough the importance of this away win. Great job, lads!
