STSL week 9: Beşiktaş – İstanbul Başakşehir

With a perfect record start to their Champions League campaign, Beşiktaş have to shift gears and focus on the Turkish league as they currently find themselves 9 points behind the leader.

A win against last season’s runner-up İstanbul Başakşehir is a must for Beşiktaş, a task which won’t prove easy for last season’s champions as they only managed a 1-1 draw and a 3-1 defeat against Başakşehir in last season’s edition of the Turkish Süper Lig.

Both teams have been in European action through the midweek, but while Beşiktaş fielded their strongest team and beat AS Monaco 1-2 at the Stade Louis II, Başakşehir opted to rest most of their regulars ahead of their clash with the Black Eagles, leading to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of German side Hoffenheim in the Europa League group stages.

Ryan Babel received a direct red card in last weekend’s disappointing defeat at the hands of Gençlerbirligi (2-1) and will therefore not be eligible to feature in tonight’s match with Başakşehir. Şenol Güneş has several options to fill the void left by the Dutchman, but Babel’s absence will certainly be felt as the 30 year old winger has been in tremendous form in recent months. His most likely replacement is his countryman Jeremain Lens, who played plenty of matches on the left wing in his career, in particular at Dynamo Kyiv.

Another option could be Cenk Tosun moving to the wing with Álvaro Negredo starting up top, but that experiment didn’t do too well last time around. Youngster Orkan Çınar is another possibility and so is using both Adriano and Caner on the left wing, a formula which has proven successful last season in the Chammions League. The most likely option at this point seems Jeremain Lens however.

With Adriano putting in another solid performance at rightback against Monaco he’s also expected to start ahead of Gökhan Gönül tonight.
