STSL week 11: Göztepe – Beşiktaş

The student meets the master as former Beşiktaş assistant coach Tamer Tuna, now in charge of Göztepe, squares off with his former mentor and Beşiktaş boss Şenol Güneş.

The second consecutive away match for the Black Eagles will likely prove another difficult challenge, as Göztepe are currently just one point shy of Beşiktaş’ 18 points from 10 games. Beşiktaş got their first win following four match dry spell in the league last week away against Alanyaspor, but it took them to the limit as the winning goal didn’t come until the final minutes of regulation playing time.

A win would move Beşiktaş firmly in to the top 3, with leaders Galatasaray squaring off with number two Istanbul Başakşehir on the next matchday. Beşiktaş can not afford to drop any more points following their recent disappointing 5 points out of a possible 12, with one of their rivals guaranteed to lose points next week they need to make sure their get the maximum out of their next few games.

Having finally bagged his first goal, can Álvaro Negredo continue his scoring ways against Göztepe?

But as mentioned before Göztepe have had a solid run in the Süper Lig thusfar, with 17 points from 10 games. Their main vulnerability laying at the back. However, while Göztepe’s defence might not be the soundest, conceding 18 goals thusfar, their experienced Portuguese goalkeeper Beto has impressed this season.

And Göztepe wouldn’t be so high up the table with a relatively shoddy defence if they didn’t have a formidable attack. Macedonian striker Adis Jahovic has scored a wopping 11 goals in his 10 Süper Lig appearances and is one of the leading scorers in the league alongside Bafé Gomis from Galatasaray with last season’s topscorer Vagner Love 3 goals behind already.

Göztepe also have plenty of Süper Lig experience in their midfield with Selçuk Şahin and former Kasimpaşa Aces Óscar Scarione and André Castro.

Beşiktaş meanwhile are without several key components as the midweek Champions League clash with Monaco took it’s toll on the Black Eagles’ roster. Tolgay Arslan, Atiba Hutchinson and Gökhan Gönül all picked up injuries and won’t be playing against Göztepe, while Tošić – who also picked up an injury – does look fit to play.

Up front Álvaro Negredo looks to get another start as Cenk Tosun is granted some rest, Negredo scored the all important winner last week against Alanyaspor and will be keen to add to his tally. In midfield Gary Medel and Oğuzhan are expected to fill the voids left by Tolgay and Atiba while Necip Uysal will likely function as the convenience rightback instead of Gökhan Gönül.

Without a doubt Beşiktaş stand ahead of another tough away match, can the Black Eagles prevail or will the student beat the master?
