Beşiktaş shocked the footballing world this Summer by signing former Real Madrid and Portugal star defender Pepe on a free transfer, today before Beşiktaş’ crucial Champions League clash with his former club FC Porto, he sat down with CNN International.

“I COULDN’T NOT GO”

After ten seasons at Real Madrid it was time for a new chapter… but where to go?

“I had many offers from many big, important European clubs. Many people, many people sending me messages on social media, to my wife aswell and those around me. I couldn’t not go. I couldn’t turn my back on all this affection that the people had given me. And I said, I have to go to Besiktas. It’s impossible not to go to Besiktas!”

“I spent a lot of time in Spain and Portugal as well. But here it’s like nothing I’ve experienced before. Turkish people live football. Football is a passion of theirs. They demonstrate it with love and affection for their team.”

“IN FOOTBALL ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN”

One fan asks Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Real Madrid and join Besiktas.
His responce…

“Hehe! Pepe’s there and Quaresma so they don’t need me!”

Q: There’s a big Portuguese presence here. If you could pick one player with whom you’d like to play with here in Besiktas… who would it be?

“If I could choose and if it were possible, of course I’d like for Cristiano to come here. He’s a person for whom I have maximum respect. Off the pitch Cristiano is an extremely normal person. Many people… when something gets out in the media, talking about him I look and I say: “This can’t be. It’s a lie”. People talk without knowing the real Cristiano. He’s a normal person with normal habits like us. He loves his family a lot. He loves his sons a lot. He’s demonstrated that he’s a good father and he also has a lot of time for his sons.He stresses the importance of being a father, which I think is important. He does this perfectly and naturally.”

PORTUGAL BOOK THEIR PLACE AT THE NEXT YEAR’S WORLD CUP IN RUSSIA
AFTER PERSONAL DISAPPOINTMENT IN 2010 AND 2014… WILL IT BE THIRD TIME LUCKY?

“We know our limitations but we also know what we’re capable of. We’re humble in every game. We work as a collective and not as individuals. This is Portugal today – a stable national team, a national team that is focussed on what we need to do to achieve at the World Cup.”
