Beşiktaş have signed Japanese star Shinji Kagawa (29) on loan from Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the season.

The Black Eagles have added the Japan international playmaker to their squad on a 6-month loan from German league leaders Borussia Dortmund. It was initially reported that the deal would also include an option-to-buy, but it has since been confirmed that the option was omitted from the current contract.

Shinji Kagawa will be paid €1,2m for his 6 month stay at the club.

“We wanted to include the option-to-buy” said Beşiktaş boardmember and club lawyer Şafak Mahmutyazıcıoğlu to DHA.

“We tried until the end to include it int he contract, but we couldn’t come to terms with Dortmund on a fee and with the player on his personal demands.”

“But in the end we didn’t want to miss out on this opportunity, so we loaned the player for 6 months.”

“But as we’ve seen previously with [Anderson] Talisca, an option-to-buy is no guarantee, the player has to want to stay himself.”

“Kagawa wanted the time to see whether he could live here or not, whether he and his family could settle in Turkey. We accepted this, but we continue to talk with Dortmund and should Kagawa decide he wants to stay we will speed up negotiations to add a buyout clause. But we need some time for this, having the option to buy doesn’t tie a player to you as we’ve seen in the past.”

Shinji Kagawa will wear the number 23 jersey, as he has previously done at Dortmund. The jersey number was last worn by Cenk Tosun, who also reached out to Kagawa on social media, asking him to “take good care of the shirt”.
