Beşiktaş draw Liverpool in the Europa League round of 32!

Updated: December 15, 2014

Beşiktaş are drawn with Liverpool FC in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, the third English team the Black Eagles will face this season.

The tie will be played over two legs on February 19 and 26, 2015.

The Black Eagles previously faced Arsenal FC in the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League (1-0 loss on aggregate) and Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League group stages (1-1 at Whiteheart Lane and a 1-0 win at the Atatürk Olimpiyat).

The Black Eagles ended their groupstage run in Group C as group winners with 12 points, 3 wins and 3 draws remaining undefeated int he Europa League.

Beşiktaş have played 10 games so far in all European competition and have recorded 5 wins, 4 draws and a single loss so far this season.

Liverpool FC are currently on a dissapointing 10th place in the Barclay’s Premier League with a negative goal talley of -3. Liverpool ended 3rd in a group with Real Madrid (3-0 & 1-0 defeats), FC Basel (1-0 defeat and 1-1 draw) and FC Ludogorets (2-1 win and a 2-2 draw) totalling only 5 points.

Beşiktaş and Liverpool met only twice before during the Champions League group stages of the 2007-2008 season. The Black Eagles won the first game at home 2-1 thanks to goals from Serdar Özkan and Deyvson Rogério da Silva Bobö. The second match was without a doubt the single most emberassing night in the proud history of our club, suffering a record breaking 8-0 defeat at Anfield road. The Eagles ended that season last in their group with 6 points after two wins and four defeats.

That was of course an entire generation of different players, only Steven Gerrard and Serdar Kurtuluş remain in the squads of both sides from that European campaign.

The Black Eagles have shown so far this season that they can stand their man in Europe, despite getting knocked out by Arsenal FC in the qualifiers they were the first team to ever keep Arsenal from a double win in UEFA Champions League qualifiers. They lost the away leg 1-0 at the Emirates but had the referee perhaps given one of the two penalties calls history may have gone a different route. And in the Europa League group stages the Black Eagles facedium off with another Premier League side: Tottenham Hotspur. Beşiktaş played an impressive game at Whiteheart Lane but only got a draw in the dying minutes of regular playing time, despite dominating the majority of the game via a Demba Ba penalty. Beşiktaş defeated Tottenham however at the Atatürk Olimpiyat stadium last Thursday to clinch the top spot in the group with the only goal of the match being scored by Cenk Tosun after roughly an hour.

Beşiktaş are currently the proud leaders in the Spor Toto Süper Lig while Liverpool are having an extremely dissapointing season so far after having one of their best seasons in two decades last year.

Liverpool fans and players alike will remember Beşiktaş striker Demba Ba (who has scored 16 goals in 18 appearances so far for the Black Eagles) as one of the opposition players who cost them their first BPL championship since 1990.

At the same time the Liverpool fans will be happy to return to Istanbul and in particular the Atatürk Olimpiyat stadium where they captured their last UEFA Champions League trophy in a legendary final against AC Milan in 2005.

With the very mediocre performances in the UEFA Champions League group stages this season from Liverpool and the strong form Beşiktaş have been maintaining all season there will definitely be possibilities for the Black Eagles to get some payback on the Reds and go on to the round of 16 by knocking out Liverpool.
