Beşiktaş: 0 Çaykur Rizespor: 1

Updated: December 18, 2014

Beşiktaş played their second game of the Ziraat Türkiye Küpasi group stages (Group F) tonight against Çaykur Rizespor.

The Black Eagles had to do without star striker Demba Ba, Cenk Tosun and Mustafa Pektemek due to injury which left Slaven Bilic with little choice but to opt for youngster Furkan Yaman (19).

Atinç Nukan made his third start of the season in the center of defense as both Ersan Gülüm and Tomas Sivok are still recovering from injury. Another youngster, Ümit Karaal, started aswell. José Sosa was one of the first team regulars who started on the bench while Gökhan Töre was left out the matchday squad to rest for the league game against Akhisar Belediyespor.

Despite missing a significant amount of gunpowder the Black Eagles dominated much of the first half and created a few chances. The most noteworthy chance was probably Serdar’s shot which hit the bar. Rizespor took the lead just before halftime when Lualua came one on one with Tolga, jumped over him and got a penalty awarded. A bit of a dodgey call as there was absolutely no contact with Tolga. Tolga chose the right corner but just couldn’t keep out the spotkick.

Early in the second half Ümit Karaal suffered an injury and Slaven Bilic was forced to bring on José Sosa who he was likely hoping not to have to play.

Beşiktaş tried to find an opening in the Rizespor defensive block but the visitors dug in very well and the Black Eagles couldn’t create any clear-cut chances. There were several opportunities on corners though, Atinç Nukan hit the bar and Pedro Franco hit the post towards the end. Furkan Yaman played a good 70 minutes and worked very hard but had an incredibly difficult game with physically dominant defenders in front of him and little to no space, a very ungrateful job for the youngster but he did make a decent impression.

The last few minutes Atinç Nukan joined the attack and in the third minute of added time was brought down by Sezer Özmen in the box preventing Atinç from getting to cross, the Beşiktaş players appealed for a penalty but the young referee denied them the spotkick. Ultimately the match was decided by details, a soft penalty given on one side while another clear penalty wasn’t given on the other side.
