Our Black Eagles have made history tonight as they knocked Liverpool out of the UEFA Europa League after 120 minutes of football and penalties.

Beşiktaş won the match over regular playing time: 1-0 with a classy goal from Tolgay Arslan, but this did not suffice to see them through to the next round as they had lost last week at Anfield with the same score. Extra time and eventually penalties therefore needed to decide the ultimate outcome of this match and in that penalty shoot-out the Black Eagles proved superior to their English rivals as they converted all five spotkicks. (Demba Ba, Gökhan Töre, Veli Kavlak, Atiba Hutchinson and Tolgay Arslan scored the penalties) Liverpool scored four out five penalties but the final spotkick was missed by Lovren.

It did not need to end in penalties however as Demba Ba had the perfect chance to kill off the opposition in the first minute of added time of the second half, but he hit the underside of the crossbar with a ferociously hard shot.

Liverpool looked sharpest in the first half and had three attempts at goal, up against Beşiktaş’ meager one. But in the second half the Eagles turned things around and took full control of the game. Tolgay Arslan was brought on for a bleak José Sosa and he thanked the coach with a brilliant strike on the 72nd minute to beat goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. There were more chances before and after that but the score at full time remained 1-0.

Beşiktaş players and fans alike celebrated the penalty victory as a championship, many considered this to be the ultimate revenge for the trashing at the hands of Liverpool in the Champions League group stages seven-and-a-half years ago. This victory will likely mean most to Beşiktaş veteran Serdar Kurtuluş who is the only remaining player in today’s squad from that famous defeat all those years ago.

Thanks to this historical victory the Black Eagles will be included in tomorow’s draw for the round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League, which you can follow live on UEFA.com!
