With his goal on Saturday against Kasimpaşa, Demba Ba brought his total league goals to sixteen this season, making him the most effective Beşiktaş player of the past thirteen seasons in the Süper Lig.

In the 2001-2002 campaign of the Süper Lig, Ilhan Mansiz scored 21 goals in 30 appearances for the Black Eagles. With 7 matches to go Demba Ba needs 5 more goals to equalize Ilhan’s record which was enough for him to become joint topscorer of the league at the time (together with Arif Erdem who had 21 goals in 32 appearances for Galatasaray).

Last season Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida managed to score 13 goals for the Black Eagles, a career best record for him.

In the 2003-2004 season Egyptian midfielder Ahmed Kamel Hassan scored 14 goals, often coming off the bench as a supersub.

One of the biggest forward transfers in Beşiktaş history was undoubtedly the Norweghian striker John Alieu Carew who was purchased in the summer of 2004 for €3.500.000 from Valencia CF. He managed to score 13 goals in his first and immediatly last season for the Black Eagles as he was sold off for a nice profit the following summer to Olympicue Lyon for €7.750.000.

In the 2007-2008 season Beşiktaş purchased Slowakian striker Filip Holosko for €5.000.000 (plus Burak Yilmaz and Koray Avci), Holosko scored 8 goals in the first half of the season for Vestel Manisaspor and went on to score 7 for the Black Eagles in the second half of the season. Technically making him the highest scoring Beşiktaş player of the previous 12 seasons although less than half of those goals were actually scored for the Black Eagles.

Demba Ba had already surpassed Pascal Nouma several weeks ago as the highest scoring foreign Beşiktaş player in a single season in all competitions, Nouma having scored 23 goals in all comeptitions in the 2000-2001 season. Demba Ba now has 25 goals in all competitions so far this season, but he has7 more chances to improve on that total.

In the last two championships for the Black Eagles, Sergen Yalçin (eleven goals in the 2002-2003 season) and Bobô (twelve goals in the 2008-2009 season) became topscorers with rather modest numbers.

To match Feyyaz Uçar’s record Ba will need a small miracle however, as the Turkish born striker scored 28 league goals in 34 appearances in the 1989-1990 season. Perhaps next season?
