With news floating in from the far East of Demba Ba’s departure to Shanghai, Beşiktaş are left with the difficult task of finding a suitable replacement for their topscorer

KOSTTAS MITROGLOU

Fulham’s Greek striker Mitroglou seems to be high on Beşiktaş’ list. The 27-year old Greek international spent the past season on loan at Olympiakos netting 19 goals in 34 appearances for the champions of Greece. Despite after what would seem to be a successful loanspell at his form er club, Fulham are looking for a buyger for their big earner. Mitro could not settle in at he London club, although this may have been the fault of then coach Felix Magath, who pressured the player in to playing while still suffering from a hamstring injury. Something which in turn caused knee problems which caused him to miss most of the 2013-2014 seasoon at Fulham. Mitroglou has an impressive record for Olympiakos though, but it should be pointed out that after the financial crisis the Greek league is not exactly the most competitive anymore and most half-decent strikers could probably score 15 goals for Olympiakos. It is believed by many Greek football pundits that Mitro is only a shim of his former self following his injury troubles last season and it remains to be seen if he’ll ever reach his former level again.

PAPISS DEMBA CISSÉ

Papiss Cissé is another name believed to be on Beşiktaş’ list. This 30-year old Senegalese striker has spent the past 4 seasons at Newcastle United, featuring in 96 Premier League matches, scoring 34 goals in the process. At one time he formed a successful partnership with Demba Ba but these pat two seasons he wasn’t always considered a starter, finding the net only twice during the 2013-2014 season appearing in only 24 matches, coming off the bench 9 times. This past season however was a sort of a redemption period for Cissé, scoring 11 goals in 22 appearancess. Most coming after Newcastlee had changed their manager and Cissé was getting more first team opportunities again. Cissé is without a doubt a capable striker, but whether he has the ability to fill Ba’s boots is another story. He’s also already 30, so it is unlikely that he will improve as a footballer or even have a decent re-sale value. With Newcastle reportedly asking £ 10 millon for Cissé this move will prove extremely unlikely, even if they were to seriously decrease their asking price.

LOÏC RÉMY

Beşiktaş boss seems to be keen on Chelsea’s 28-year old striker Loïc Remy. The Black Eagles have good ties with Chelsea and this can only enhance the chances of this transfer happening. Remy was brought in only last summer from QPR, but featured only in 19 Premier League matches for the Blues, coming off the bench 13 times but still managing to score 7 goals. Remy cost Chelsea € 10,5 million last summer but Beşiktaş are looking at the possibility to loan the player at first.

JOHN GUIDETTI

Guidetti is actually not known to be on Beşiktaş’ list but should definitely be a player the Black Eagles should look at. From the players mentioned on this list, Guidetti is by far the youngest. The 23-year old Swedish international spent the past few years at Manchester City although in reality he spent most his time out on loan. His most noteworthy loanspell was without a doubt in the Eredivisie at Feyenoord Rotterdam where he attained cult hero status among their fans after scoring 20 goals in 23 appearances. Despite only spending a season in Rotterdam, Guidetti is still the striker to whom’s mold Feyenoord are looking to find their next striker. Guidetti wasn’t only popular with the fans, he in turn thrived under the support of those same fans, even once stating that the only fans in the world who could possibly maych Feyenoord’s would be those of Beşiktaş. Making it obvious that he is familiar with the Black Eagles. But after his loanspell at Feyenoord, several injuries prevented him to make much progress in terms of development. Spending a much less successful loan period at Stoke City. This past season however Guidetti had a decent spell at Celtic, netting 8 goals in 24 appearances. Guidetti is currently away with the Swedish U21 side at the U21 EURO’s in the Czech Republic where he plays together with Beşiktaş defender Alex Milosevic. Manchester City did not extend Guidetti’s deal making him a free agent, several Italian clubs among which Lazio Roma are said to be interested. Besides his free agent status another thing which makes him an interesting option for the Black Eagles is his age and the fact that unlike Demba Ba and likely any other players on this list is the fact that Guidetti would not be a guaranteed starter. With Cenk Tosun on the squad it would arguably be best to have a striker for him to compete with starting off on level ground, rather than immediatly being seen as the second striker. Both Guidetti and Cenk would likely greatly benefit from eachother’s presence, potentially pushing eachother to a higher level by having to compete for the starter position. Guidetti would also certainly have a great re-sale value.
