A replacement for Tolgay

As you all know our team had a camp in Germany from the 5th until the 12th of July. The emphasis in the camp was mainly put on training on the new tactics head coach Şenol Güneş is planning to use in the new season and on the conditional part of the game. This is the reason the team did not play any friendly matches in Germany, which will be started in the second camp in Austria. Güneş did however point out that ‘all our trainings should have the atmosphere of a real match’. Interesting was that for the first time in years, the camp was accessible to every fan, which made the visiting fans very happy.

A replacement for Tolgay

While the camp was going really well, the whole club was shocked at once when on the last day of camp Tolgay Arslan injured himself. It turned out Tolgay had torn his left knee ligament and he now has to undergo surgery. This will cause him to be out for at least 6 months, meaning he will miss the remainder of this calendar year.

Veli Kavlak is still wrestling with his shoulder injury, the reason he actually missed the camp and a huge part of the end of last season. The technical staff and board were still discussing if a replacing midfielder for Veli was needed, but with the injury of Tolgay, a new midfielder now seems inevitable and the search has already even started. The board will go on and transfer a midfielder after the announcements of Ricardo Quaresma, a central defender and a striker (which is believed to be either Mario Gomez or Dame N’Doye).

Transfers in time for the second camp

So a winger, a central defender and a striker will be bought. Güneş asked for the board to buy at least 2 of these players before the first camp in Germany, but unfortunately they couldn’t manage this in time. This was mainly caused by clubs raising their asking price at the last moment. The board is now doing their best to transfer some players before the second camp and in time for the first friendly matches of this season. It is believed they have already reached an agreement with Quaresma and that they are now in the last negotiation stage with players like Douglas Silva, Rhodolfo, Gomez and N’Doye.

Second camp in Austria

The team had their last training in Germany on Thursday morning and all players participated. This is with the exception of Tolgay Arslan of course, who has returned to his family in Hamburg and will undergo surgery next week. The training mainly consisted of sprints. The team flew back to Istanbul in the afternoon and will now have 3 days off. The players are expected on the training field on the 20th of July and they will go to Austria for a second camp until the 4th of August.
