Eagles abroad: Sam Irvine

With a short delay we present to you our third edition of the ‘Eagles abroad’ editorials, today we focus on one of our Eagles living in the UK! Sam Irvine, I had the pleasure of meeting Sam in person last year as he accompanied us to the away game at the Emirates stadium against Arsenal in the Champions League qualifiers.

Tell us a bit more about yourself, who are you, how old are you and where are you from?

My name is Sam, I am 21 years old and I was born and live in Greater Manchester, England. I am a massive Glasgow Rangers FC supporter.

How did you first come in contact with Beşiktaş?

I first came in to contact with Beşiktaş through visiting Turkey on holiday. I have visited Turkey many times now and have a great fondness for the country and it’s people, it’s culture and especially the cuisine!

Since when do you support Beşiktaş?

I started supporting Beşiktaş through my visits to turkey. On my first visit to the country I met a Beşiktaş fan who gifted me the legendary 2003 centenary Beşiktaş shirt in return for my Rangers FC shirt which i had given to him as they were also a supporter of Rangers. I have been a Beşiktaş fan ever since that day and have grown more and more passionate about the club over the years.

What attracted you in the club?

The main thing that attracted me in the club was the supporters and the passion they have for the club. There is a great family feeling surrounding the club.

Have you ever had the pleasure of visiting a match live? Or do you have plans to do so in the future?

Sam and Demba Ba during the Summer training camp of 2014 in the UK.

Yes, up to now I have attended 4 games. My first 2 games were pre season games against Wigan and Oostende in England when the team visited here back in 2014. I was at the Emirates stadium for our game against Arsenal in the Champions League qualifiers last season and I also attended our game against Liverpool at Anfield in the europa league. I cannot wait for the new Vodafone Arena to be completed so I can visit Istanbul for a game.

What is your fondest memory being a Beşiktaş fan?

I have gathered quite a few fond memories! Even though we ended up losing the tie, the Arsenal game is a fond memory, meeting Kaan and Volkan and marching through London with the rest of the Beşiktaş fans was a great experience! The other things that stick in my mind are the win against Fenerbahçe in the last derby at Inönü back in 2013 when Olcay scored in the last minute and also our win on penalties against Liverpool when we knocked them out of the Europa League last season.

Do you have a favourite player, if so who is your favourite player?

In the current squad i would have to say either Gokhan Töre or Veli Kavlak are my favourite players, but it is tough to single out any players from the current squad as I think we have a great squad at the moment, one which I think is capable of delivering us an overdue league title this year, hopefully!
