Mario Gómez to get his first EURO 2016 start against Northern Ireland

Beşiktaş striker Mario Gómez is likely to get his first EURO 2016 start for Germany tonight as ‘Die Mannschaft’ take on Northern Ireland in Group C.

The Germans currently have four points, as do Poland,  after they drew 0-0 last week. Both Poland and Germany can still win the group depending on the results of tonight’s matches. Germany currently have a better goal tally of +2 while Poland have +1. So both teams would do well to score several goals tonight if they intend to win their group.

Mario Gómez did not play in the opening match (2-0 win over the Ukraine) but came in as a second half substitute against Poland. Germany coach Joachim Löw tried out a false 9 system with Mario Götze, but this system has failed to get the desired results. The German fans and press have been pushing for Löw to start Mario Gómez up front and it seems like the Turkish Süper Lig topscorer will get his chance tonight against the Irish.

Gómez started several games during the EURO 2016 run up in friendly matches and scored a goal against Slovakia from the penalty spot and a thunderous header against England. Mario Gómez has scored 27 goals in 65 appearances for Germany. Will he bag his 28th goal tonight for die Mannschaft?
