Matchday 5

After a positive start to the season both in the league and in the Champions League, Beşiktaş are ahead of a crucial week in their season with two premier moments in their history. First up on Saturday there’s the first ever derby at the brand new Vodafone Arena and on Wednesday there is the first every European match at Vodafone Arena.

First up is the derby against Galatasaray, who just like the Black Eagles are on 10 points after 4 games. With Istanbul Başakşehir being the only team left in the league who have a perfect record, Beşiktaş and Galatasaray will be fighting it out among themselves who will remain either closest on their tail or take over at the top of the league should Başakşehir drop points this weekend.

Beşiktaş have played Galatasaray 3 times under Şenol Güneş. Last season the Black Eagles won both games, 2-1 at the Atatürk Olimpiyat thanks to goals from Mario Gómez and Gökhan Töre, and 0-1 at the Türk Telekom Arena thanks to a goal from Mario Gómez. Earlier this Summer both teams squared off again in the Super Cup final playing to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes, Beşiktaş’ goals coming from Ricardo Quaresma, but Galatasaray won the penalty shootout 3-0.

As far as the regular season is concerned the Black Eagles have already had several good challenges to measure their strength against, getting a 2-2 draw away at Konya and a 1-1 draw in the Champions League away against Benfica. Galatasaray on the other hand are yet to be truly tested and the derby will be their first big hump in the road.

Anderson Talisca stepped up and duly delivered with an emphatic free-kick equalizer deep in to added time

Anderson Talisca has proven to be a major source of danger early on for the Black Eagles, can he come up big again in his first derby?

With an importnat match in the Champions League around the corner for Beşiktaş against Dynamo Kyiv, the derby could have come at a better time perhaps but the players are sure to be extremely motivated after suffering an undeserved defeat in the Super Cup on penalties against this Galatasaray side.

For Beşiktaş there are a few minor question marks. First there is the goalkeeper situation, Fabri has started in the past two league matches but Tolga started in the Champions League against Benfica. Right now all signs seem to point to a third consecutive start for Fabri in the league, which will please most Black Eagles fans.

At the back Güneş is likely to go with the same back four as he did against Akhisar, meaning both Caner Erkin and Gökhan Gönül will be starting on the wings.

The biggest question mark is in midfield, has Oğuzhan Özyakup fully recovered from the injury he picked up against Benfica? If so the young playmaker who just turned 24 years old on Friday will certainly start in this important match. Gökhan İnler picked up an injury against Akhisar and has missed the majority of training sessions this week so a first derby start won’t be in the cards for him it seems like and it’s even still a question mark whether he’ll start on the bench or not.

Anderson Talisca has been the man in form for the Black Eagles with 2 goals and 1 assist in his first 3 matches for his new club. He’ll almost definitely get a start on Saturday ahead of Tolgay Arslan.

The only real question mark up front is whether Cenk Tosun remains the starting striker or will Vincent Aboubakar get the nod? Aboubakar got his first start against Benfica but is yet to get his first start in the league, with Cenk’s underwhelming performance against Akhisar the Cameroonian International could maybe get his chance on Saturday although right now Cenk seems to be the front runner.

For the visitors their starting lineup seems relatively clear, their only question marks are whether Nigel De Jong will start after picking up an injury against Kayserispor two weeks ago and if Selçuk İnan remains in the team as he has been putting in underwhelming performances as of late. If both De Jong and Selçuk will start that would probably mean Wesley Sneijder moves to the left wing instead of Yasin Öztekin, if Selçuk or De Jong start on the bench then Sneijder will start at number 10 with Öztekin on the left wing. Bar any last minute injuries or tactical surprises by Olde Riekerink their starting lineup seems relatively predictable.

Beşiktaş predicted XI:

Fabricio; Gökhan Gönul – Marcelo Guedes – Dusko Tosic – Caner Erkin; Atiba Hutchinson – Oğuzhan Özyakup – Anderson Talisca; Olcay Şahan – Ricardo Quaresma – Cenk Tosun

Galatasaray predicted XI:

Fernando Muslera; Sabri Sarioglu – Aurélien Chedjou – Hakan Balta – Lionel Carole; Tolga Ciğerci – Nigel De Jong – Selçuk İnan; Wesley Sneijder – Bruma – Eren Derdiyok
