STSL week 13: Fenerbahçe – Beşiktaş

By
Updated: December 1, 2016

The Black Eagles stand ahead of a difficult start to December with two tough matches ahead of them, first up is an intense confrontation with Fenerbahçe on Saturday at the Şükrü Saracoğlu, after which Beşiktaş travel to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv for their final Champions League group stage match.

Beşiktaş survived the previous two matches in Europe and the league by the skin of their teeth and now stand ahead of another three difficult challenges. Beşiktaş are currently in second place, two points behind leaders Istanbul Başakşehir while Fenerbahçe are in third, four points behind the Black Eagles. Beşiktaş still remain unbeaten in the 2016/17 season after 19 official matches, but Fenerbahçe are in an excellent form following an initial disappointing start to the season.

Ricardo Quaresma has been the most influential Beşiktaş player this season, providing 7 assists and scoring 4 goals in 19 games.

Beşiktaş last won at the Şükrü Saracoğlu stadium way back on the 17th of April 2005, a historic 3-4 win with forward Daniel Pancu ending the match as the Black Eagles’ goalkeeper, more than 11 years ago. (watch highlights)

To say the least, Fenerbahçe have a solid home reputation when it comes to derby match as Galatasaray haven’t beaten them since the previous century (1999). A difficult task ahead of the Black Eagles to say the least, and with a crucial match in the Champions League around the corner the team will have to perform at a hundred percent this coming week.

Caner Erkin and Anderson Talisca are naturally still out with long term injuries, but Luiz Rhodolfo has resumed full team training earlier this week. Dusko Tosic is still a bit doubtful but Şenol Güneş has a near full squad available to him outside the long term injured players. One of the questions on many peoples’ minds is whether or not Gökhan Gönül will start against his former club, unless Adriano is left out of the starting lineup it seems unlikely that Gökhan will start ahead of Andreas Beck on Saturday.

In midfield the big question is whether Tolgay Arslan or Gökhan Inler will start, against Benfica Inler added something the team lacked in order to combat the Portuguese Champions but against Başakşehir Tolgay had the bigger impact of the two (both played 45 minutes respectively in each match).

Atiba Hutchinson, Marcelo Guedes and Ricardo Quaresma are both set to start but will miss the next game (against Bursaspor) should they receive a yellow card. Quaresma has been the man on form in recent months for the Black Eagles and he’ll be the man they’ll look towards to decide the game int heir favour.

Fenerbahçe have recovered Dutch international Jermain Lens from a hamstring injury, he resumed full team training on Thursday but whether he’ll start is still a question mark. Former Black Eagle Ismail Köybaşi will miss the match due to a red card he received during Fenerbahçe’s midweek cup match against Gençlerbirligi.

Referee appointed to this match is Hüseyin Göçek, he officiated the Fenerbahçe – Beşiktaş derby once before, in that match he awarded Beşiktaş with a penalty but also showed the Eagles two red cards while showing Fenerbahçe one. You may remember this match for the ‘penalty spot incident’ involving Fabio Bilica (who vandalized the penalty spot prior to Bobo’s missed penalty).
