STSL week 15: Kasimpaşa – Beşiktaş

Updated: December 16, 2016

With one third of the season well behind us Beşiktaş are still firmly on course to extend their Süper Lig title, following a crucial win against Bursaspor on matchday 14 the Eagles remain within the city limits of Istanbul as they’re facing Kasimpaşa on the road.

Last season a Riza Çalımbay coached Kasimpaşa were one of only two sides (the other being Akhisar) to take points from Beşiktaş in both matches. While the first match ended in a 3-3 draw the second match ended in a 2-1 win for Kasimpaşa despite Beşiktaş taking an early lead through José Sosa.

Cenk Tosun will be looking for his 10th Süper Lig goal of the season against Kasimpaşa

Truth be told Kasimpaşa have lost a considerable amount of quality as opposed to last season and they also lost coach Riza Çalımbay (currently at Antalyaspor). Players such as Yonathan Del Valle, Eren Derdiyok, Ryan Donk and Óscar Scarione are all gone and Kasimpaşa have been struggling this season.

Despite all that they still have some quality players, including former Beşiktaş academy player Adem Büyük. Kasimpaşa are currently in 14th place 5 points clear of the relegation zone, a narrow win against Rizespor gave them some breathing space but they still are in desperate need for points.

On the other hand Beşiktaş are currently in second position on level points with leaders Istanbul Başakşehir but behind on goal differnetial. With two more league matches left to go before the January transfer window and subsequent Winter break, Beşiktaş want to end 2016 with two more wins. As their opponents are both in the lower regions of the standings that should certainly be their goal, but they can not afford to get complacent and drop points against either Kasimpaşa or Gaziantepspor next week.

The Black Eagles will have to do without their rock in defence Marcelo Guedes while Ricardo Quaresma does come back from his yellow card suspension. Atiba Hutchinson and Adriano Correia need to watch their steps as they’re one card removed from a suspension themselves.

Anderson Talisca and Aras Özbiliz have both made their return to training but neither will be ready to play until the second half of the season. Caner Erkin is obviously still out for several months. Luiz Rhodolfo is expected to start next to Dusko Tosic in defence, replacing the suspended Marcelo. While Ricardo Quaresma will take his place in the starting lineup once again.
