STSL week 17: Osmanlıspor – Beşiktaş

Updated: January 16, 2017

After nearly a three week break from Turkish Süper Lig action the Black Eagles take on European revelations Osmanlıspor to officially close the first half of the season.

Without a doubt a difficult match awaits the Black Eagles in the cold Osmanlı stadium in Ankara, with pitch conditions being far from optimal. Beşiktaş have bolstered their ranks with three signings this January (Ersan still pending confirmation), of which two are eligible to play tonight; Ryan Babel is expected to start while Matej Mitrovic is expected to be on the bench or in the stands.

Can Anderson Talisca and Ryan Babel breath some fresh air through the Beşiktaş frontline?

Beşiktaş will have to do without forward Vincent Aboubaakr, who is off to the African cup of nations, while the hosts are missing three key players with Papa Ndiaye also off to the AFCON, Thiago Pinto out with an undisclosed injury and Musa Cagiran out with a yellow card suspension. Despite missing 3 key players Osmanlıspor will prove to be a formidable opponent, if their European run is anything to go on. Both Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe also failed to come away with a win in Ankara earlier this season and despite clinching the title at home against Osmanlıspor last season and beating them twice over the course of the season; Osmanlıspor had proven to be one of the most difficult opponents the Eagles faced last season.

Apart from Aboubakar and the still injured Caner Erkin, Beşiktaş have all their players available for squad selection and will be starting with an almost ideal eleven tonight in Ankara, bar any last minute injuries.

Following another impressive win this weekend Istanbul Başakşehir will remain top of the table for atleast another week regardless of Beşiktaş’ result, but the Black Eagles can’t afford to drop points if they want to stay within striking distance of the surprising leaders and retain their second position int he standings.
