STSL week 19: Beşiktaş – Konyaspor

By
Updated: January 29, 2017

Beşiktaş return to Vodafone Arena for the first time in a league match in the new year, they take on Atiker Konyaspor who are currently in 6th place in the standings.

The Black Eagles will need to beat Konyaspor if they want to retake first place in the standings following Başakşehir’s last grasp win over Bursaspor on Sunday (1-0 in the 94th minute). With Fenerbahçe’s surprising trashing at the hands of Kayserispor later on the day on Sunday (4-1), Beşiktaş can take a 9 point lead on last season’s runner’s up.

Cenk Tosun will be looking for his 13th Süper Lig goal of the season, while his closest rival in the topscorer standings Rijad Bajic will be looking to score his 10th.

Beşiktaş will be without Atiba Hutchinson, who suffered an injury on training several days ago, which will likely see Gökhan İnler start in midfield.

Cenk Tosun and Gökhan Gönül both needed to be substituted off during Beşiktaş’ 4-1 win over Alanyaspor last week, but both are expected to be in the starting eleven as their substitutions seemed to be precautions.

Konyaspor haven’t been able to replicate their good run in the second half of the 2015/16 season and have found themselves struggling to get in to the top 5 which could see them qualify to the UEFA Europa League once again. 2017 started with a 0-1 home defeat at the hands of Galatasaray but Konyaspor managed to rebound with a narrow 2-1 victory over Rizespor last week. Earlier this season Konyaspor and Beşiktaş played to a thrilling 2-2 draw, but the European schedule seemed to have a great toll on Konya.

While Beşiktaş lost in Konya on the final matchday last season (2-1) while they already were crowned Champions, they beat Konyaspor at ‘home’ in the Başakşehir stadium 4-0. This will be both team’s first meeting at Vodafone Arena.
