ZTK round of 16: Beşiktaş – Fenerbahçe

Updated: February 5, 2017

Beşiktaş square off with archrivals Fenerbahçe in the Turkish cup round of 16 at Vodafone Arena, the winner will earn a ticket to the quarter finals.

The round of 16 will be decided in a single leg, while the quarter and semi finals will have home and away legs. The group stage winners play at home while the second placed teams will play away, Beşiktaş won their group ahead of Kayserispor but Fenerbahçe finished second behind Gençlerbirligi (who were eliminated yesterday by Kayserispor).

Yesterday season revelations Istanbul Başakşehir already eliminated reigning cup holders Galatasaray after a 2-1 victory, with a brace by Beşiktaş loanie Mustafa Pektemek. Rizespor and as previously mentioned Kayserispor also qualified for the quarter finals while today Akhisar Belediyespor have already secured a spot among the final 8. Kasimpaşa and Konyaspor are currently taking on Osmanlispor and Ümrainyespor respectively with Beşiktaş taking on Fenerbahçe later today.

With Fenerbahçe’s defeat at the hands of Kayserispor this past weekend in the Süper Lig, the Yellow canaries have only a slim chance left at the Turkish league championship and will not want to lose out on another trophy by exiting the Turkish cup early. But Beşiktaş have built up a solid home reputation over the past year, they’ve gone 31 official matches without a defeat at home, in all competitions and have never lost at their newly opened Vodafone Arena. In addition, Beşiktaş haven’t lost to Fenerbahçe in the Turkish cup since 1983, with 15 confrontations between the two sides in that 34 year time span.

However, every such run comes closer to it’s ending the longer it continues and Beşiktaş nor the fans should count this match as won just yet. Fenerbahçe will be extremely motivated to take Beşiktaş’ scalp and boost their own confidence heading in to the remainder of the season. Both teams already met earlier in the season at Fenerbahçe’s home turf where the match ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw. Last season Beşiktaş beat Fenerbahçe 3-2 at the Olimpiyat stadium but also lost 2-0 at Fenerbahçe’s home ground.

Can the Black Eagles continue their impressive run at home or will Fenerbahçe spoil the party and be the first visiting team to claim a victory at Vodafone Arena? Or last but not least, will it go down to extra time and penalties? One thing is certain, it’s bound to be a thrilling match tonight at 18:30 CET!
