STSL week 24: Beşiktaş – Kayserispor
The Black Eagles play their second consecutive home game in the Turkish Süper Lig after edging out Rizespor 1-0 last weekend, while also playing a European game on Thursday (1-1 against Olympiakos).
Their opponents this week are team on form Kayserispor, who have started 2017 in tremendous fashion with 5 wins and 2 draws. Eversince Kayserispor appointed Beşiktaş legend Sergen Yalçin as their coach they’ve gone undefeated in the league in the new year, accumilating the second most points next to Beşiktaş. Where Kayserispor were still dangling down in the cellar of the standings only a few months ago, they are now settling in to midtable and should they continue their excellent run, they could even find themselves in contention for a European ticket. Sergen Yalçin’s arrival and the addition of several new players such as the former Portuguese intentional Varela, Güray Vural and Welliton returning from injury have all had a tremendous impact on Kayserispor’s form. But arguably the biggest factor, atleast on the pitch, has been the 24 year old midfielder Deniz Türüç. Deniz was already on fire during the first half of the season, despite the overall underwhelming performance of his team, but eversince Sergen took over he has moved Deniz to the number 10 position and the Turk born in Holland has only continued to shine under his tutolage. The young playmaker isn’t just a threat from open play, he’s also a deadball specialist both direct and indirectly, his assists from corners and set-pieces are plentyful and he’s also scored several stunning freekicks including last week against Kasimpaşa.
As far as the Black Eagles are concerned, they’ve won 7 out of their last 8 league games but they’ll certainly be put to the test by Kayserispor, who have beaten both Galatasaray (2-1) and Fenerbahçe (4-1) in 2017. Beşiktaş are without Gökhan Gönül and their Portuguese wizard Ricardo Quaresma meaning Şenol Güneş will need to concoct a different attacking approach without Quaresma’s pinpoint crosses. While these two are missing due to yellow card suspension, Dusko Tosic makes his return after a four match absence following his direct red card in the Turkish cup last month.
It will be very interesting to see how Şenol Güneş approaches this game and how well Sergen Yalçin will anticipate the experienced Beşiktaş coach’s moves. Beşiktaş are clear favourites at their own turf but Kayserispor are far from a walk in the park type of opponent and could pull off an upset if the Black Eagles aren’t on their toes.
Andreas Beck will take his place at rightback while Vincent Aboubakar is expected to take Quaresma’s place in the starting eleven.
