STSL week 25: Antalyaspor – Beşiktaş
Beşiktaş have another tough away game ahead of them with Antalyaspor, coming of their European victory over Olympiakos which took them to the Europa League quarter finals.
Antalyaspor are currently in 6th position in the league and need to secure a victory over the reigning champions to go level in points with 5th placed Trabzonspor. Riza Çalımbay’s team has come of an extremely good run ever since his appointal following matchday 8, after which they lost only once in 12 games. But more recently they’ve suffered back-to-back losses against first Akhisar Belediyespor (3-0) and then Galatasaray (2-3), they did manage to edge out Rizespor last week however.
The hosts will also have to do without one of their more important players at the back in the Brazilian Diego Angelo, who recently suffered an injury. Beşiktaş on the other hand look to recover Marcelo Guedes who was subbed off last week against Kayserispor due to injury. Antalyaspor are expected to start with Ferhat Kaplan in goal instead of Saso Fornezzi while Beşiktaş see both Gökhan Gönül and Ricardo Quaresma return to the first team following their yellow card suspensions. Beşiktaş will likely start with their best possible eleven as they should have everyone bar Caner Erkin and Demba Ba available.
As Beşiktaş dropped two points last weekend against Kayserispor at the Vodafone Arena, they’d best win this match with Antalyaspor, although it certainly won’t be easy. Antalyaspor beat Fenerbahçe earlier in the season at the Antalya stadymu, 1-0. And Galatasaray needed a last grasp free-kick goal to secure 3 points two weeks ago, while Samuel Eto’o didn’t even play in that match due to suspension. Both teams have plenty of pressure on them to win, Beşiktaş will want to stay top of the table headed in to the international break while Antalyaspor can’t afford to have Trabzonspor stay ahead of them if they have the ambition to play in Europe next season.
Vincent Aboubakar is available for this match but Şenol Güneş may opt to send a firm message to the in-form striker following his unacceptable red card against Olympiakos on Thursday, leaving the Black Eagles to fend the Greek champions off with 10 men for nearly a full hour. Whether or not that will have drained the Eagles’ energy is something we’ll have to wait and see, Aboubakar’s dumb action did not cost the Black Eagles qualfication but it may yet cost them points in the title race.
