STSL week 5: Beşiktaş – Konyaspor

Updated: September 18, 2017

Coming of a historic Champions League victory on the opening matchday of the group stages away against FC Porto at the Dragão stadium, Beşiktaş will look to continue their current good run with a win at home against Konyaspor.

It’s only been a little over a month ago when Konyaspor dealt Beşiktaş their first and so far only defeat of the season in the Turkish Süper Cup final in Samsun, thanks to a Nejc Skubic penalty in second half stoppage time, after Cenk Tosun had equalized not too far from full time as Razack Traoré had put Konyaspor in front in the first half already.

Beşiktaş now look far more formidable and are slowly looking ready for the new season, FC Porto was their first test and the Black Eagles passed it with flying colours. Konyaspor also had a European fixture to face this past week as they travelled to France where they narrowly lost to Olympique Marseille at the Stade Velodrome: 1-0.

Álvaro Negredo is expected to make his second start of the season against Konyaspor tonight.

Konyaspor did well to frustrate the French giants but conceded an Adil Rami header from a corner kick in the 48th minute. Defensively Konyaspor looked more formidable than they had this past Süper Lig weekend and offensively their quick attackers up front caused Marseille some trouble on rare occassions when they actually got a good ball. Moryke Fofana and Evouna in particular.

Both Şenol Güneş and Mustafa Reşit Akçay are expected to make several changes to their midweek European starting eleven for rotations purposes. Especially for Beşiktaş it’s bound to be a long season so giving certain players rest from time to time will benefit them int he long haul.

While Cenk Tosun, Atiba Hutchinson, Ricardo Quaresma and Oğuzhan Özyakup all started and played a fine match against Porto,  Güneş is likely to start with Álvaro Negredo, Gary Medel, Jeremain Lens and Tolgay Arslan in their steads. Oğuzhan suffered a minor injury during training on Friday and the other players will be rotated out in order not to accumulate too much fatigue. Dusko Tosic, who received a red card this past week against Karabükspor, will most likely be replaced by Matej Mitrovic in the starting eleven. Mitrovic had already played the final 20 minutes against Karabükspor and made a solid impression.

Gökhan Gönül is back in training but not yet match fit to start against Konyaspor tonight, Adriano Correia will most likely start at rightback as he did against Porto. Apart from these changes the remaining of the Beşiktaş eleven will be your typical Beşiktaş side.
