All roads lead to a Lucescu

Updated: April 27, 2019

As is well known by now, Besiktas will be looking to replace Senol Günes once the current season is over. Günes has taken the helm of the Turkish national team and his contract is also ending at the end of the season, he won’t be continuing as Besiktas coach which means the Black Eagles are already intensively looking for a replacement.

Meetings have already been held with at least two coaches, former Besiktas and Turkey boss Mircea Lucescu has been heavily rumoured with a return to the banks of the Bosphorus in recent weeks. Rumours only intensified after the Romanian tactician attended several Besiktas games with his former assistant, while he was in charge of Turkey, Tayfur Havutçu, who was also Besiktas captain under Lucescu between 2002 and 2004.

Thusfar Lucescu has refused to reveal anything and is remaining very cryptic about his future. However, it has been learned from trusted sources that he has met at least twice with Besiktas already.

Like father like son

But Mircea isn’t the only Lucescu linked to the soon-to-be vacant Besiktas job. His son Razvan, currently in charge at PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece, has also been linked with the club.

In fact, there has been at least one meeting with Lucescu Jr. as well in recent weeks. However the 50-year old coach is reluctant to leave his post in Greece as he is very keen on leading PAOK in to the UEFA Champions Leauge next season. Making his arrival at Vodafone Park, at least for the time being, unlikely.
