Beşiktaş: 1 Asteras Tripolis: 1

Updated: September 19, 2014

In the first week of the UEFA Europa League group stages, Besiktas faced Asteras Tripolis at the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadium. The game started with the guests, Asteras, kick-off.  In the first minutes of the game Besiktas took control. Our team came close with Oguzhan Ozyakup from a free kick after 8 minutes, which hit the post. The Black Eagles increased the pace and had the opponent under pressure. In the 14th minute Mustafa Pektemek gave Veli Kavlak a back heel pass in which unfortunately the attack ended as a goal kick. Our attack that developed from the left side in the 17th minute ended because no one was able to touch the ball in the penalty area. Mustafa Pektemek got injured and was replaced by Cenk Tosun in the 30th minute. Gokhan Tore scored the goal that put our team in the lead. The attack that occurred in the 33rd minute with Oguzhan Ozyakup’s back heel pass to Tore who took the shot without waiting from outside the penalty box to put us in front. In the remainder of the first half, Oguzhan Ozyakup and Gokhan Tore missed several chances to put us in a further lead. The first half ended with our 1-0 lead.

The Black Eagles started the second half in which the first minutes were played in a very slow tempo. In 53rd minute Olcay Sahan tried to score with Ramon Motta’s pass from the left wing but unfortunately just missed the target. In the 69th minute Oguzhan Ozyakup was taken off and our new transfer Jose Sosa took his spot on the pitch. In the following sections our team defended with many players and tried to score with counter attacks. In the closing stages the visitors scored the equalizer from the left wing with Parra. The remaining moments didn’t lead to another goal and the game ended in a tie.

The other game in the group was between Partizan and Tottenham which ended in a goalless draw. Looking at the circumstances and the way we played, we have missed a huge opportunity to put us on the top of the table. The amount of chances we had pleased the fans that came out to Olimpiyat Stadium in the rain but the finishing was very poor showing how important Demba Ba is for this team.

The Greek side is no competition for Besiktas but the late equalizer gave them hope for the remaining games in the group. Bilic and the players on the other hand have got some thinking to do. The way they performed in the closing section cannot be accepted against stronger teams if they want to go through the group stages.

Lack of talent in the offence and lack of creativity can be solved with Demba Ba and Sosa joining the team but Bilic needs to have this team bite more than they did in the last two games.

Looking at the amount of stadiums in Istanbul, maybe other options should be considered for the remainder of the season. Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadium is torture for the team and the fans.
