Mircea Lucescu hints at Shakhtar stay

Updated: April 29, 2015

After Shakhtar Donetsk played a vital match against Dinamo Kiev in the league. Mircea Lucescu signalled that he could stay in his post match comments.

Lucescu made these comments after playing to a goalless draw against league leader Dinamo Kiev and still being behind them by 5 points with 5 weeks left to go:

“After being champions for 5 years in a row, of course you want to become champions again. Even if we did win this match, we didn’t have a chance for the championship. We actually played all of our home games away (Shakhtar has been playing their matches at Lviv due to the Civil War in Ukraine). This wasn’t very easy to do. We also had to play against the refs at the same time as well. Hopefully the season system will change next year and the Play-off, Play-out system will come into play.”

Lucescu, who has an expiring contract with Shakhtar, made people question if he is extending his contract with Shakhtar with his comments on next season’s plans.

In the news of the Turkish press, it’s been frequently written that both Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş are interested in the Romanian coach. It was also stated that some teams in the Russian Premier League would make an offer for the experienced coach.

The 69 year old coach, who has been coaching Shakhtar Donetsk since 2004, has won the league 8 times, the Ukrainian Cup 5 times, the Ukrainian Super Cup 6 times and the UEFA Cup once in his 10 years with Shakhtar.
