Şenol Güneş clear: “I want Ba and Töre to stay but…”

Updated: June 11, 2015

Şenol Güneş has been appointed as the new Beşiktaş manager today, signing a 2+1-year deal with the club. During the press conference, the new boss at the Vodafone Arena was clear of his ambition when asked about the future of his two star players after ongoing rumors in the media linking both Demba and Gökhan with moves to the Premier League.

“I want both Demba Ba and Gökhan Töre to stay at the club, but ultimately we have to do what’s best for the club given UEFA’s sanctions.” said Güneş.

Beşiktaş are under an UEFA settlement and are not allowed to conduct new transfers which involve transfer fees, unless the club sells players first. With former Beşiktaş manager Slaven Bilic now at West Ham United in the Premier League rumors have already started to flare up about Beşiktaş players being courted by the Hammers.

Demba Ba is the latest name of Beşiktaş players which has been linked to an east-London move, after Gökhan Töre and Olcay Şahan had already been named yesterday.

But whether West Ham have the wage budget to afford Demba Ba is another question, many Premier League sides were interested in the Senegalese hitman’s services this past summer but with Chelsea unwilling to sell to rivals Arsenal and Liverpool the remaining interested sides were not able to match his £80,000 a week salary which he had at Stamford Bridge.

Demba Ba’s first season in Istanbul has been extremely successful, Beşiktaş’ number nine scored an impressive 27 goals in 44 appearances and also provided 7 assists. Making him one of the most productive strikers across Europe.

Ba seems to be extremely pleased with life at the club and in Turkey, so it remains to be seen if he could be tempted with a move back to London at this time. Earlier interest from Qatar was already brushed off by the 30-year old finisher as he is content to stay where he is.

Gökhan Töre on the other hand, while happy at the club, might be tempted by a move to the Premier League. After spending time at Chelsea’s youth academy the 23-year old winger never maanged to make a senior appearance and playing in the Premier League might well be on the skilled dribbler’s bucket list.

But even if the Hammers, or another club, are able to tempt Ba away with a lucrative enough offer and sparkle Töre’s interest, they will still need to match a steep asking price as neither player will be allowed to leave for under €10.000.000.

Olcay Şahan would perhaps be the most likely rumored target of West Ham to be allowe dto leave, while Olcay has performed well in his 3-years at the club, he is not considered to be an irreplaceable player like Ba or Töre and the club is even looking for a new left winger regardless of an Olcay transfer. The Black Eagles are a lot more likely to be willing to listen to offers for Şahan, while Ba and Töre may be a more sensitive subject. Although club officials have stated that everyone is for sale, for the right price.
