Our players Olcay, Oguzhan, Cenk Tosun and coach Güneş had the following to say following the team’s impressive 2-5 victory over Mersin Idmanyurdu on matchday one of the 2015-2016 Spor Toto Süper Lig season;

Olcay Şahan; “Before getting into footballing matters, first I’d like to say happy birthday to Tolgay and get well soon to both him and Veli. We played a good game under tough conditions. I thought the best goal of the night was our second goal. It was a textbook team goal.”

Cenk Tosun: “It’s good to start the season with 3 points. We started good and scored an early goal. We conceded a goal during a period where we started to sit back but we started the second half on the front foot and got the result we needed. I would like to congratulate Olcay and Oguzhan for their performances. Now we have to forget about this match and focus on our match against Trabzonspor.”

Oğuzhan Özyakup: “I’d also like to say “get well soon” to Tolgay and Veli and also happy birthday to Tolgay. We had very heavy training sessions for the past 5-6 weeks. Now I understand why we had those sessions.We started the game really well. We talked about starting the game on the front foot and pressing intensively for the first 10 minutes. After our first goal, we gave our opponents too much space and they punished us. It’s always nice to score or assist goals but ultimately it’s the final score that matters. Our coach putting his faith in me had a big role in my performance tonight. I thought our previous coach neglected to give me these chances but I’m over that now. I set out some targets for me this season and I’m going to do my utmost to fulfill these goals.”

Şenol Güneş: “Conditions can not be used as an excuse, you go out to win and you do it. We had brief stretches where I thought we did well, and some stretches where we had lapses of concentration and we lost our discipline. The most important thing is to keep improving our game and becoming a team that gets into lots of goalscoring opportunities and gives out none to the opposition. If we concede a goal when the opposition is down to 10 men that means we still have a long long way to go. I congratulate my players and thank them for their effort and sacrifice. Quaresma was playing fine but since we were up 2-1 and we were constantly being carved open through the middle it was essential for us to take out an offensive player and get Necip in to minimize those threats. It was a tactical choice. Oguzhan was good going forward but we need him to be great in both aspects of the game. We need him to be better at defending.”
