Wenger confident in Ospina’s Arsenal future

Updated: January 9, 2016

Beşiktaş are still in search for a goalkeeper to transfer in this window, and one of the goalkeepers linked to Beşiktaş was David Ospina. The Colombian isn’t getting much playing time this season, as Arsenal regard Petr Cech as their first goalkeeper. President Fikret Orman and board member Erdal Torunoğulları have however said getting Ospina mid-season is impossible, because Arsenal isn’t willing to let him go before the end of the season. The past few days a possible loan-deal was still being rumoured. Oscar Cordoba even recommended Ospina a move to Beşiktaş on a loan deal. Arsenal head coach Arsène Wenger has now however said that he is not thinking about sending Ospina away to another club.

“Ospina can be the goalkeeper of the future here”

Wenger said the following about Ospina: “I think he can be the goalkeeper of the future here as well. With Petr Cech getting older year after year, he may get more games as well. I believe that Ospina is not treated fairly. If you look at the whole of 2015, everybody neglects he played six months. I personally think he is world-class. I did not take Petr Cech based on the performances of Ospina. Petr Cech was just an exceptional opportunity where it was difficult to say no. It was not because I was unhappy with Ospina. I was very happy with Ospina. It was just an opportunity where saying no would not have been right. Unfortunately, Ospina has been punished by that decision. I rate him highly. If you look at his performances from January to the end of the season, he saved us in many games.”

Ospina was expected to start in the FA Cup game against Sunderland today, but Cech started anyway as Ospina was left out of the squad. Arsenal tweeted on their official account that the reason Ospina missed the game was that he “has a slight groin problem”.
