After two games in the Turkish cup against 1461 Trabzon to kick off 2016, the Black Eagles will recommence their Süper Lig campaign against Mersin this Sunday, who are currently in a 17th position in the league.

Mersin are currently in turmoil. They recently sacked coach Bülent Korkmaz and replaced him with Hakan Kutlu, but Kutlu quit the job only 24 hours later ahead of the presidential elections because he “did not feel the confidence of the current board”. Mersin went on to appoint Nurullah Sağlam but 48 hours being appointed he too quit the job, stating that the squad was in a “terrible physical condition” after an unsuccessful training camp. Which left Mersin without a headcoach going in to this match.

The last time these two teams met during the season opener, Beşiktaş won in style at the Mersin Arena: 5-2 thanks to a brilliant Oğuzhan Özyakup and Cenk Tosun’s first hattrick. One would think that all this chaos would make it an easy game for Beşiktaş, but as often is the case a wounded animal still has some bite left in him. The Black Eagles would do well not to underestimate this match and go for an early goal.

Mersin İdmanyurdu traditionally don’t do to well against Beşiktaş, managing only one win in seven confrontations these past five years, all other matches ended in victory for the Black Eagles, scoring 14 goals and conceding only 5.

Cenk Tosun scored his first ever career hattrick against Mersin earlier this season. He has scored a total of 11 goals so far this season making him the second highest scoring Beşiktaş player this season, behind Mario Gómez who has 15 goals to his name.

Are Mersin ripe for the slaughter or will they give the Black Eagles a real run for their money this time around? One thing is certain, Beşiktaş can not afford to start off the second half of the season by dropping points at home against a team in the relegation zone headed in to a difficult away game versus Trabzonspor next week. So far no transfers yet for the Black Eagles, so Tolga Zengin will start atleast one more game in goal this weekend.

Beşiktaş will miss İsmail Köybaşı, who has not been included in the matchday squad after suffering an injury on Thursday against 1461 Trabzon in the cup. Andreas Beck, Mario Gómez and Luiz Rhodolfo are both one yellow card removed from a suspension.

Beşiktaş  predicted XI:

Tolga Zengin; Andreas Beck – Luiz Rhodolfo – Ersan Adem Gülüm – Dusko Tosic; Atiba Hutchinson – Oğuzhan Özyakup – José Sosa; Ricardo Quaresma – Olcay Şahan – Mario Gómez
