Matchday 18

With exactly a month delay, the Beşiktaş – Mersin game of matchday 18 will take place tonight after it’s initial postponement on the 17th of January due to heavy snowfall.

There was no way of playing the match a month ago due to the heavy snow fall.

The match then led by referee Mete Kalkavan was stopped after only 5 minutes due to heavy snowfall and postponed to a later date. Since then the Black Eagles also saw their matchday 19 match against Trabzonspor postponed for similar reasons and have since only played two other league matches. A convincing 4-0 win against Gaziantepspor and a 2-2 draw against Başakşehir this past weekend. Mersin, who only gathered a total of 10 points during the first half of the season, have collected an impressive 7 points from their 3 Süper Lig matches so far in the new calendar year under coach Ümit Özat.

Mersin continued their good run of the past few weeks this weekend by beating Galatasaray 2-1 at the Mersin Arena while Beşiktaş was halted by neighbours Medipol Başakşehir. After going 2-0 down the Black Eagles managed to secure a point in the final 15 minutes of the game thanks to an instrumental Ricardo Quaresma, who had come on from the bench a little past the hour mark. With two games in hand Beşiktaş are four points behind leaders Fenerbahçe and they will need to capitalize on that tonight by defeating 17th ranked Mersin at the Başakşehir stadium in Istanbul, but with Mersin’s newly gained confidence that might not be the easiest task. Whereas Mersin was in absolute turmoil a month ago, the appointment of Ümit Özat since then seems to have turned things around for the financially troubled club. Will they continue their strong run in 2016? Or will the Black Eagles take another 3 points in their title bid.

With the long term injury to Luiz Rhodolfo, sale of Ersan Adem Gülüm and loaning out both Alexander Milosevic and Pedro Franco, the Black Eagles are left in a pickle as they have no real central defenders available for this match with both Marcelo Guedes and Alexis Delgado not being eligible to play in this match.

Beşiktaş predicted XI:

Tolga Zengin; Andreas Beck – Dusko Tosic – Necip Uysal – İsmail Köybaşı; Atiba Hutchinson – Oguzhan Özyakup – José Sosa; Ricardo Quaresma – Gökhan Töre – Mario Gómez
