Mario Gómez has revived his career over the past season at Beşiktaş, scoring 28 goals in 41 appearances for the Black Eagles. His performance and return to the German national team have caught the eye of Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg and they have forwarded a 3-year contract offer to the player’s agent.

However Mario Gómez has made it clear that he isn’t open to a return to Germany at this time. He stated in a recent television interview that “Champions League football next season is incredibly important for me”, Gómez told Güntekin Onay of NTV Spor two weeks ago. While Wolfsburg did not manage to qualify for Europe this season.

Mario Gómez has been very positive about a potential prolonged stay in Istanbul. Yesterday he told Germany’s Kicker that “I can imagine spending another year or two at Beşiktaş” but that his future was “still open”.

Beşiktaş hold 50% of the transfer rights to Mario Gómez, giving them an edge in negotiations with Fiorentina. Beşiktaş and Gómez had the option to extend the loan deal by another season for a mere symbolic €1000 on the 21st of April. However Gómez refused to make his decision at that stage in the season stating “I’ve made the mistake before to decide my future in April when I signed for Fiorentina, because they lost their Champions League ticket in the final second of the season against AC Milan and didn’t bringt he players they promised me”. Beşiktaş will now have to pay a transfer fee to acquire the full rights to Mario Gómez’s contract.

Additionally Fiorentina are currently under an FFP settlement and still owe Gómez back wages, so it will be difficult for the Italian club to try and force Mario Gómez to go to a club he doesn’t want to go to. Fiorentina will need to offload Gómez one way or another this Summer as his wages weigh heavily on the club’s finances.
