The Portuguese want Quaresma in the team

Updated: June 11, 2016

Ricardo Quaresma has had a great second half of the season with Beşiktaş, ultimately becoming champions of Turkey. He was rewarded with a spot in the national team of Portugal for Euro 2016 by head coach Fernando Santos. Star player Cristiano Ronaldo is surely getting a place in the atack, leaving the question if Quaresma will get his place next to him, with Fenerbahçe’s Luis Nani looking as his biggest rival. It seems like Santos and the Portuguese people have made up their mind: Quaresma should start in the line-up.

Quaresma was in the starting 11 who destroyed Estonia with 7-0 in the friendly game on Monday, scoring 2 goals and also assisting 2. The Portuguese media praised him a lot, even picking him as man of the match over Ronaldo. It is expected that Santos will also start the winger during Euro 2016, choosing him over Nani. Fenerbahçe’s winger seems understanding, saying: “Our goal is to get the cup and we should focus on this. Quaresma is an amazing player. His performance this season was very good. He did a great job against Estonia. I’m not surprised honestly.”

Not only trainer Santos has made up his mind, the Portuguese people also have made their choice. In a poll in Portugal asking if Ricardo Quaresma or Luis Nani should start at Euro 2016, the big majority of 96% of the people chose Quaresma.

It therefore looks like the 2 close friends since their time at Sporting will both be starting in France.
