Milan targeting Mario Gómez as possible Carlos Bacca replacement

Updated: June 14, 2016

Italian giants AC Milan are targeting Beşiktaş striker Mario Gómez (31), who is currently on loan from AC Fiorentina reports German media outlet sport1. But will the Italian tradition club be able to lure Gómez away from Champions League football in exchange for another Italian adventure given how his last stint in the Serie A ended?

Mario Gómez led Beşiktaş to the 2015/16 title with 26 goals, crowning himself as the Süper Lig topscorer. With his performances he earned a spot back on Joachim Löw’s 23 man squad for EURO 2016 in France. However is future remains unclear as he did not use the option in his contract to automatically extend his stay in Istanbul by the 21st of April.

Gómez previously stated “I’ve made the mistake once before in my career to sign for a club in April while everything was still unclear, Fiorentina went on to lose their Champions League spot on the final matchday and the transfers they told me would happen ended up not happening. Playing int he Champions League next season is very important for me”. Since then however Beşiktaş were crowned Champions of Turkey and earned themselves a place in the group stages of next season’s UEFA Champions League.

"To play Champions League next season is very important for me personally" - Mario Gómez to NTV Spor.

“To play Champions League next season is very important for me personally” – Mario Gómez to NTV Spor.

Following their title glory, Gómez spoke to NTV Spor on live television and said “For me it’s important that we aren’t just going to play Champions League to play Champions League, I want to be competitive. Of course I don’t expect us to win it, but we should be aiming to win several games. I know what I have here and I can imagine myself staying but it’s important for me that the club show their ambition and improve the already good squad we have for the Champions League.”. Gómez also made similar statements to the German media just before the start of EURO 2016.

Italian giants AC Milan are now targeting a move for Mario Gómez reports as a replacement for Carlos Bacca who is linked strongly to a €30 million move to West Ham United.

It is no secret that Fiorentina desperately want to offload Mario Gómez this Summer, who is in his last year of contract with the Viola, as he weighs heavily on their wage bill.

While Milan are a massive club, Mario Gómez has stated time and time again that Champions League is extremely important for him next season. In addition the two seasons he spent in Italy were one of the darkest periods of his career. Now that he has found what he claims to be “possibly the best form of my career” at Beşiktaş, it would seem a contradicting decision should he decide to join the Rossoneri.

Regardless of where Mario Gómez should end up, if he is sold to another club Beşiktaş will receive 50% of the transfer fee.

Eventhough it isn’t clear yet whether Mario Gómez will stay or leave Beşiktaş this Summer, rumours area already running wild on who could be his possible replacement. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has today linked the Black Eagles with a move for Southampton striker Graziano Pellè, while Tutto Mercato are linking the Black Eagles with a move for AS Roma striker Edin Dzeko.
