TSK: Beşiktaş: 1 Galatasaray: 1 (pen: 0-3)

Updated: August 13, 2016

Beşiktaş have lost their chance at the first trophy of the season after a defeat on penalties at the hands of cup winners Galatasaray.

Şenol Güneş fielded a modest team to start off with, leaving Adriano, Quaresma, Rhodolfo and José Sosa on the bench while Gökhan Gönül was watching from the stands. The Black Eagles started with Tolga in goal, Beck, Marcelo, Necip and Tosic in defence. A strong midfield with Tolgay, Oguzhan and Atiba Hutchinson with Olcay and Kerim Frei on the wings, Cenk Tosun started as the lone striker.

Galatasaray started the first half looking most hungry but after a the opening ten minutes or so the Black Eagles took charge of the game and pressed the cup winners back. However neither side really had any clear-cut chances in the first half. Beşiktaş should however have had a penalty in the 39th minute after Bruma took down Dusko Tosic in the box but referee Mete Kalkavan waved play on.

In the second half Beşiktaş started off best with a great opportunity after 53 minutes for Cenk Tosun after an excellent through pass by Olcay, Cenk beat Muslera but also beat the far post as his shot went wide.

Cenk had several more clear-cut chances as the match approached the 90 minute mark but Muslera kept him out twice while he missed another chance.

0-0 after 90 minutes meant the match would hav eto go to extra time. Against the run of play Galatasaray took the lead after 100 minutes after a free-kick from Wesley Sneijder, Hakan Balta was left unmarked at the second post and headed it home although the replay did show that he was in an offside position.

Beşiktaş did not bend for the cup winners however and found the equalizer early in the second half of added time, Olcay crossed it towards the second post where Quaresma met the ball with his head, the ball took a deflection off Aurélien Chedjou and beat Fernando Muslera: 1-1 after 107 minutes.

Towards the end of the second half of added time Beşiktaş was piling on the pressure, another penalty shout was turned away after Bruma challenged Quaresma in the box, he didn’t play the ball and there was clear contact but it did feel as if Quaresma went down a bit too easy to warrant a penalty this time around.

With a scoreline of 1-1 after 120 minutes the match went to penalties.

Cup winners Galatasaray prevailed in the penalty shoot-out as they converted all 3 of their spotkicks (Selçuk Inan, Hakan Balta and Tolga Cigerci scored) while all 3 Beşiktaş’ spotkick takers missed their efforts (Oguzhan, Cenk and Atiba).

A tough pill to swallow for the Black Eagles after being the better side for most of the game, but a lack of clincial finishing ended up costing them in the end. A positive to take away from this match however is that Galatasaray really didn’t manage to create any chances throughout the 120 minutes, even with a defensive line that will likely not play too much together throughout of the season that’s certainly a positive to take away from this game.
