STSL week 10: Beşiktaş – Trabzonspor

Updated: November 5, 2016

Following another excellent midweek performance in the Champions League with a draw against Napoli, Beşiktaş stand to host Trabzonspor in the Turkish Süper Lig. With Galatasaray’s defeat at the hands of leaders Istanbul Başakşehir on Friday the Black Eagles can’t afford to drop points again as they need to keep the gap limited to just two points.

While Trabzonspor have had a difficult start to the season, their surprise victory at Türk Telekom Arena against Galatasaray on matchday 8 will certainly keep the Black Eagles on their toes. Not to mention that Trabzonspor were one of just two teams who managed to beat the Black Eagles at home last season, albeit the match was played at Atatürk Olimpiyat. Both teams dropped two points on matchday 9 as Beşiktaş played to a 1-1 draw in Ankara against Gençlerbirligi, while Trabzonspor couldn’t get past Rizespor as they played to a 2-2 draw in w hich Trabzon needed two penalties to get their goals.

Oğuzhan Özyakup has been struggling with a nagging injury eversince the first matchday of the Champions League against Benfica where he was substituted off at halftime. His return is sure to give a huge boost to the Black Eagles who have been relying mainly on Ricardo Quaresma to provide the creative spark in his absence.

Beşiktaş were missing quite a few players last week but apart fromt he long term injured players Caner Erkin and Anderson Talisca, it looks like everyone will be available for the match against Trabzonspor, bar Dusko Tosic who picked up a slight injury against Napoli and is out for 10 days in addition to which he would have been ruled out for this match regardless as he accumilated a yellow card suspension.

Atiba Hutchinson, Oğuzhan Özyakup, Gökhan Inler and Ömer Şişmanoğlu have all returned to full team training and three of them even featured against Napoli on Tuesday. The return of Atiba and Oğuzhan will certainly give the Black Eagles the biggest boost as they formed the heart of the Black Eagles’ Championship winning midfield last season. At the back Luiz Rhodolfo will be making his first league start of 2016/17 season following his ACL injury midway through the 2015/16 season. Rhodolfo had already made two appearances as a substitute, both last week and in week 2 against Konyaspor and made his first start of the season in the Champions League on Tuesday against Napoli.

Cenk Tosun received some heavy criticism after his wasteful performance against Gençlerbirligi last weekend but Şenol Güneş is expected to want to give Cenk a confidence boost and keep him in the starting lineup in support of Vincent Aboubakar up front. Andreas Beck put in another solid performance in the Champions League but as often has been the case this season Şenol Güneş prefers the extra offensive impulses from Gökhan Gönül in the league and will probably opt for the experienced Turkish international at rightback.

Trabzonspor have proven to be a bit of an oddity, their gameplan will likely revolve around parking the bus and they can be an incredibly tough nut to crack at times. But at the same time if Beşiktaş manage to score an early goal this could turn out in to being a goal fest. If we look at the pattern of Trabzonspor’s matches this and even last season then we can see that if they concede first the flood gates are often opened, but if they can hold on and score first they are incredibly difficult to break down. With 11 points Trabzonspor are currently in an 11th place in the league table, a win would give them a tremendous boost and perhaps even get them in the conversation for those European spots. Beşiktaş on the other hand are currently on 21 points and in second place, a win would put them 2 points behind leaders Istanbul Başakşehir but a loss of points could possibly see Bursaspor overtake them in the standings.
