STSL week 11: Adanaspor – Beşiktaş

Updated: November 18, 2016

Coming off the most recent international break Beşiktaş stand ahead of a tough schedule in the coming weeks, but they start off with a – on paper – relatively easy fixture away at Adanaspor.

The newly promoted side has struggled with scoring goals and are dangling down in the relegation zone in last place with just 6 points from 10 matches. Adanaspor also haven’t won since matchday 5 (at home against Alanyaspor 3-2).

The Black Eagles are coming off a 2-1 win over Trabzonspor at Vodafone Arena and are looking for no less than 3 points on Saturday. With Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray playing eachother on Sunday the Eagles could take a larger lead on atleast one of their rivals should they win in Adana and with a home match against leaders Istanbul Başakşehir next weekend, Beşiktaş need to keep winning to stay on course if they hope to overtake their city neighbours in the coming weeks.

It seems as if it were a David vs. Goliath type of match, but let’s not forget that David won that one. Beşiktaş will need to keep their attention on Adanaspor and not underestimate them if they want to take all 3 points. Beşiktaş coach Şenol Güneş has already mildly shown his hand as he decided to leave Dusko Tosic, Luiz Rhodolfo and Adriano Correia in Istanbul in order to not risk them for the important Champions League confrontation on Wednesday with Benfica.

Beşiktaş could qualify from the Champions League group stages for the first time in their history on Wednesday should they beat Benfica and are surely alraedy looking ahead towards that match, but they shouldn’t take their trip to Adana too lightly and concentrate on the task at hand. Beşiktaş owes it to themselves – and t heir fans – as Turkish Champions to come away with 3 points on the morow.

The Black Eagles will also start with an experimental back four following the exclusion of Rhodolfo, Tosic and Adriano from the matchday squad. Andreas Beck is expected to start on the left while Atinç Nukan is expected to partner with Marcelo in the center of defence.

Beşiktaş have only ever won one match officiated by referee Ali Palabiyik, so they definitely can’t afford to take this match lightly.
