Beşiktaş – Benfica post-match reactions

Updated: November 25, 2016

“This game was a miracle”

Şenol Güneş: “In the end we are sad about the draw. Maybe we were absent in the first half because of our motivation, we panicked after the first goal. We allowed the opponent to play well. The second half we were ourselves again when we got in control of the game. God helped us too. This game was a miracle. Our team has been good in every game in this group except for today’s first half. Even if we didn’t get our desired result, I would have been proud of my players. Our fans supported us no matter what the score was. Our players didn’t give up after the 0-3. We would have had a bigger advantage if we would have won the game. We are now going to concentrate on our league game.”

“I knew we could still turn this around”

Cenk Tosun: “This was an incredible feeling. When I was subbed on, I knew we could still turn this around. My goal was the start of everything. We got in a good vibe and played a good second half. Our coach played me on the left wing and told me to play close to Aboubakar. He wanted me to get the ball and run at their right-back. He told me to play like the game was still 0-0 and I believe I have done what he has told me. Everyone was sad during half-time, we didn’t play the game we wanted. Our coach tried to motivate us and I think his words have helped us.”

“If we had 5 more minutes…”

Oğuzhan Özyakup: “We knew Benfica was a strong opponent, but at the same time we knew we were strong at home. They found their goals due to our mistakes. During half-time our coach said ‘we are 0-3 down, but whatever happens we have to play our own game’. That’s what we did and we got our come-back. They missed a chance at the start of the second half and that was the breaking point of the game. After the game in the dressing room we said we could have won the game if we had 5 more minutes. We still have 2 important games until the game against Dynamo Kiev. The game against Kiev is going to be a difficult one. We are a strong team. We need to concentrate on the league starting tomorrow.”

“We wanted it badly”

Ricardo Quaresma: “I want to congratulate the team for the second half. We wanted it badly and we succeeded. We weren’t awake in the first half. When you aren’t awake against a team like Benfica the result is going to be very bad. We are now going to rest and return to the league. It isn’t difficult to be motivated in games like these. As an experienced player I needed to be helpful and if I was helpful I am very happy.”
