STSL week 12: Beşiktaş – İstanbul Başakşehir

Updated: November 26, 2016

Traditionally the Beşiktaş – İstanbul Başakşehir derby isn’t such a big deal apart from that they’re always a tricky opponent, but this season the derby has taken a much larger meaning as the visitors are currently two points clear at the top of the table and remain undefeated.

Beşiktaş are naturally the favourites to come out on top in this match, but Başakşehir haven’t lost a single match this season in the Süper Lig, just like the Black Eagles. Add to that that Beşiktaş have had a 6 goal classic on Wednesday in the Champions League against Benfica. Beşiktaş can’t afford not to be at 100% for this match, but how much did the game against Benfica take out of them?

Beşiktaş came back from a 0-3 scoreline at halftime to a 3-3 draw in the second half against Benfica, Şenol Güneş had brought in both Gökhan İnler and Cenk Tosun at halftime and it looks as if he’ll be keeping those two in his starting lineup as they played a big part in turning Wednesday’s match around.

A win for the visitors would see them take a five point lead on the Black Eagles while a win for Beşiktaş would see them overtake Başakşehir in the standings. Both teams remain undefeated in the league so a defeat would naturally be a first for either side.

İstanbul Başakşehir have shocked many in the Turkish football world this season as they already beat both Fenerbahçe (1-0 at home) and Galatasaray (1-2 away) earlier in the season, they’re clearly a side that should not be taken lightly.

Beşiktaş have 3 key players who are one yellow card away from a suspension; Atiba Hutchinson, Marcelo Guedes and Ricardo Quaresma. With matches against Fenerbahçe and Bursaspor in the coming weeks these players will hav eto watch themselves so they won’t miss any of these key matches.
