STSL week 30: Beşiktaş – Fenerbahçe

Updated: May 7, 2017

Following a shocking defeat at the hands of Istanbul Başakşehir last week, Beşiktaş have seen their lead at the top of the table drop down to just 1 points, although Başakşehir have one more match played. A win in the derby against archrivals Fenerbahçe would see the Eagles move 4 points clear going in to the final four games.

While Beşiktaş are looking for the second consecutive title, Fenerbahçe still harbor some minor hope to finish second in the league and grab that Champions League qualifier ticket.

Can Vincent Aboubakar put his mark on a derby game for the Black Eagles?

Fenerbahçe are currently 8 points behind and while the title seems outside of their reach, they still have plenty to play for. Both sides met twice earlier this season, once in the league and once in the cup. They played to a scoreless draw in their first encounter this season in the league, but Fenerbahçe won their cup confrontation 0-1 at the Vodafone Arena after a first half red card from Dusko Tosic, to this date still Beşiktaş’ only defeat at their new stadium.

Both sides have several players unavailable for this match, Beşiktaş are without midfield general Atiba Hutchinson due to injury while Fenerbahçe miss their key man in midfield Mehmet Topal due to a yellow card suspension. Beşiktaş are also missing Dusko Tosic, who is also serving a yellow card suspension. While Fenerbahçe have somewhat of a headache at rightback with Gregory Van der Wiel reportedly being unwilling to play and Turkish international Şener Özbayrakli being out injured. Dick Advocaat is expected to start midfielder Ozan Tufan at right back with ex-Beşiktaş player İsmail Köybaşı likely starting at leftback.

With Tosic suspended and Atiba out injured there will be a few changes in Şenol Güneş’ lineup, either Necip Uysal or Atinç Nukan is expected to start in Tosic’s stead while Tolgay Arslan is the frontrunner to take Atiba’s place int he starting lineup. Vincent Aboubakar is expected to start up top ahead of Cenk Tosun and Demba Ba.

Beşiktaş need 4 more wins in their remaining 5 games to claim their 15th Championship, assuming Başakşehir can win all of their remaining 4 games. A win tonight against Fenerbahçe would put Beşiktaş firmly in to the driver’s seat headed in to those final four games, but a draw or a defeat still wouldn’t be the end of the world, although it could be damaging mentally. The fans will expect a firm responce from the team following last week’s debacle. While their confidence might be shook up at the moment, a victory could do wonders.
